Local journalist Conelia Harry has reported in the Zululand Observer on the completion of a three-year ZAR 1.34 billion machinery upgrade at the Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT).  The upgrade includes the replacement of stackers and ship loaders.  According to the article, two new rail-mounted stacker reclaimers are expected to have a capacity of 6 000 tonnes per hour compared to the previous 4 500 tonnes per hour.  The ship loader will have capacity of 10 000 tonnes per hour compared to the previous 8 000 tonnes per hour.  The upgrade is expected to boost productivity and improve vessel turnaround times at RBCT, which achieved a record output of 76.47 million tonnes of coal exported in 2017.
